On August 9th, A-League newcomer Auckland FC announced the loan signing of Bournemouth’s New Zealand goalkeeper Paulson. His former club, Wellington Phoenix, subsequently issued a statement expressing their protest, accusing the A-League of failing to protect their interests.
22-year-old Paulson came through the Wellington United youth system and joined Wellington Phoenix in 2018. This summer, he transferred to Bournemouth for a fee exceeding €2 million, but has returned to the A-League before the new season began.
Wellington Phoenix stated in their statement: “Wellington Phoenix are seeking further information about the loan of Michael Paulson from Bournemouth to Auckland FC.”
“While the club supports the principle of amending the ‘Caceres Clause’ to allow Michael’s immediate return to the A-League this season, many questions remain unanswered.”
“Most importantly, we are unaware how the ‘Player registration and salary cap constraints’ as stated by the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) will work within the broader framework of ‘balancing the development of the A-League while ensuring the integrity of the competition’.”
