Former A-League star striker Stamatelopoulos has suffered an injury in a friendly match for Motherwell, potentially affecting his preparations for the upcoming Asian World Cup qualifiers.
In Motherwell’s 1-2 loss to Rangers, Stamatelopoulos was forced off with a thigh injury. Motherwell manager Steven Hammell said: “The last thing we want to see is him injured, and at the moment it doesn’t look good. His thigh tightened up and it quickly became a lot of pain, and it could get worse. We will have to see how he is and assess him.”
Stamatelopoulos is said to have left the A-League for the Scottish Premiership in hopes of solidifying his position in the national team. However, his aspirations are now in jeopardy. Australia has been drawn in a tough group in the Asian World Cup qualifiers, alongside China, Japan, Indonesia, and Bahrain. Australia will face Bahrain on September 5th, and it remains uncertain whether Stamatelopoulos will be fit for the match.
