On July 30, German football legend Lothar Matthäus pointed out in his personal Sky Sports column that Bayern Munich’s performance in the summer transfer window has not been satisfactory, and worse, the time left for them to operate is running out.
Matthäus believes that Bayern’s moves in the transfer market are close to “playing their hand,” which makes it easy for negotiating partners to figure out Bayern’s tactics and hinder their demands. Matthäus wrote: “Every club knows Bayern still wants to clear out some players. At this point, defending champions Leverkusen have kept their championship squad from last season, while Bayern is still caught up in endless discussions.”
Regarding the mystery surrounding Bayern’s centre-back options, Matthäus also has his own opinion. He wrote: “I don’t think Bayern needs to rush to bring in a new centre-back this summer. The current squad is already very good. Bayern wants to buy Jonathan Tah? I think that’s a gamble. If I were Tah, I would ask myself: If Bayern really wants me, why are they willing to spend €125 million to bring in other players, while the offer for me is only €25 million?”
According to Matthäus, if Tah can return to his form from Leverkusen’s championship season, it would be a major reinforcement for Bayern Munich, but this cannot be determined at present. Matthäus wrote: “It is not yet known whether Tah will be guaranteed playing time in Munich. Furthermore, he doesn’t seem to adapt well to Bayern’s preferred four-back system. At the European Championships, Tah performed poorly in the national team’s four-back system, but he performed more consistently at Leverkusen.”
