Bayern is currently holding a training camp in South Korea and will face Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly match on August 3rd at 7 pm. In a pre-match press conference, head coach Vincent Kompany stated that Bayern couldn’t find a manager more hungry for victory than him, and discussed the key to improving the team’s defense.
Responding to reporters’ questions about improving defense, Kompany said: “When it comes to organized defense, there’s a lot to talk about. It’s not just about the back four. If you look at Bayern during their 11-title streak, they had not only excellent defenders, but also a very strong overall pressing system. We have to consider defending as a unit, all 11 players. I remember playing against Jerome Boateng at Manchester City, and he was one of the best defensive partnerships in the world alongside Dante. What I’m trying to say is that as a defender, you can become top-notch when the whole team helps you defend.”
Bayern’s performance was disappointing last season, and Kompany hopes to see a response from his players: “We want to be better than last season, and we will do everything we can to achieve that. (Last season’s performance) I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s response, and I’ve already seen it in training, and I hope to see it in the upcoming matches.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming friendly match against Tottenham, Kompany said: “We want to maintain a good fitness level, we want to see the right attitude in the game, including those who haven’t had much training time. Most players will be playing tomorrow. New signings? I’m happy with the new players, sometimes it’s not just a matter of level and quality, but also about the energy they can bring to the team, I hope they will try their best to help the team succeed.”
Kompany discussed legendary players like Müller and Neuer: “I have a very clear idea about the goals that I and our team want to achieve. Look at these players – not just Manuel (Neuer) and Thomas (Müller), they have been used to working with high-expectation managers for many years. Even though they are already legends, they still want to improve, that’s what makes them legends. So, it makes things a little easier working with players who are so powerful and experienced.”
In the 2022-23 season, Kompany led Burnley to promotion to the Premier League seven rounds before the end, earning global acclaim. However, he failed to prevent Burnley’s relegation last season, sparking criticism. Many fans pointed out that Bayern is a completely different team from Burnley, so his ideas and philosophy need to change. Kompany disagreed: “Why would you change your ideas because you’re working for another team? You should always try to win every game. I’ve always been like that, even at the youth level, that’s how I was born. The club couldn’t find a manager more eager to win than me! From that perspective, I think I’m a good fit for the team!”
