For many years, he was one of the most enigmatic coaches in professional football. Daum had been battling illness since autumn 2022. He initially withdrew from public life, but soon things changed. Daum gave interviews again and appeared on talk shows. “Cancer chose the wrong body,” was his core message. Daum wanted to encourage others with his fighting spirit.
Daum coached four teams in the Bundesliga: Cologne, Stuttgart, Leverkusen, and Frankfurt. In 1992, he led Stuttgart to the Bundesliga title. In addition, he led Cologne to two Bundesliga runner-up finishes and Leverkusen to three Bundesliga runner-up finishes.
