Bayern Munich CEO, Christian Dreesen, gave an interview to TZ (Münchner Abendzeitung), where he stated that Bayern was unhappy with last season’s performance and therefore invested heavily in new signings. He emphasized that the club is not focused on economic profit but rather on achieving success on the pitch.
In the summer, Bayern brought in Olis, Pavard, and Konate from England, adding to their previous acquisition of Kane. Why did Bayern choose to recruit from the Premier League, where salaries and transfer fees are higher? Dreesen explained, “We dared to make major transfers because we are confident in our choices. However, I still don’t want people to compare us to Premier League clubs. First, Premier League teams are ahead of us by light years in terms of television broadcasting revenue. Second, the ownership structure in the Premier League is very different from ours. In contrast, we have to maintain operations without national or billionaire funding, and we need to find ways to fund ourselves.”
Was Bayern’s lack of trophies last season financially impactful? Dreesen noted, “We were not satisfied with the athletic performance last season, but it did not have a huge economic impact on us, despite losing some additional sponsor income. Bayern’s brand is strong, so does the club not need a championship title to be financially successful? No, I don’t think that will ever be the case. What matters most for our image, attractiveness, international impact, and fans is athletic success; it’s the core, the foundation. We can cope with one year without a title, but if we go several years without success, it will negatively impact our long-term economic strength.”
Regarding the new signings, Dreesen stated, “Olis is an exciting winger. Pavard should have joined Bayern last year. It is said that “life has a way of giving you a second chance,” and that proved to be true. Hiroki Ito was undoubtedly one of the reasons Stuttgart conceded fewer goals than us last season.”
When asked about this season’s goals, Dreesen said, “Our goals are the same as every year, to fight for every possible win. The most important and most honest trophy is the Bundesliga, but we also have ambitions in the DFB Pokal and the Champions League. We have invested a significant amount of money, and our goal is to strive for the best possible results this season. Bayern does not seek the greatest profit, but rather the greatest sporting success!”
