On July 12, Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt officially announced that 40-year-old Makoto Hasebe will join the club’s U21 youth team coaching staff, completing his transition from player to coach.
Hasebe announced the end of his playing career this summer. Since joining Frankfurt in 2014, he has made 304 appearances for the Bundesliga powerhouse in all competitions, and has been a mainstay in Frankfurt’s midfield and defense for the past decade, as well as the player with the most appearances in the Bundesliga among Asian players.
Now, Hasebe’s bond with Frankfurt is not ending. The club officially announced that Hasebe has signed a new contract with the team and will be assistant coach of the U21 team, marking the former Japan captain’s first coaching role in his career.
