On July 4th, football journalist Chen Yong shared his personal opinion on social media. Regarding the problems currently facing Shandong Taishan, the media person believes, “Regarding the issue of money, it’s very simple. It’s not about money itself, it’s about mindset.”
The journalist’s opinions are as follows:
1. In 2021, there were issues with the money allocation, but it’s now 2024. What has been done in the meantime? Are there any forward-looking plans? Have there been any concerns about potential risks? Almost nothing has been done. The electricity bill is always paid in full, Shandong Luneng also provided a significant amount of money, and the club itself has raised some funds, especially the 600 million yuan they have. They can make do with this and keep things going. Why bother worrying? This was the situation in the past few years.
2. In 2022 and 2023, the situation gradually worsened. A financial crisis arose in 2023, but every time, the situation was rescued with Shandong Luneng contributing some money and the club finding ways to raise funds. The priority was to avoid unpaid salaries and ensure survival.
3. For three and a half years, the problems have been evident, but there has been no clear strategic plan, no concept of preparation for contingencies, no specific and detailed future plans, and no unified mindset. This is what is truly worrying. It seems the club doesn’t believe Taishan is that important, and perhaps doesn’t have the energy to consider these issues.
4. The situation this year could have been maintained, but there have been unexpected events, such as the incident caused by the bonus issue that had a significant impact. Injuries have also added to the problem.
5. Spending can definitely be reduced and will be reduced. However, under the principle of honoring contracts, it won’t happen this year, and it’s unlikely next year either. It will probably have to wait until 2026. However, even with reduced funds, the club can still maintain its position as a top team, as long as everyone is united in their mindset and actions.
6. In China, we don’t have many teams that can be considered top-tier, so even without considering the emotional connection that Shandong people have with the team across the country, its influence cannot be ignored.
7. The most important point is that other provinces and cities have to find their own solutions, but Taishan has two state-owned enterprises supporting it. That’s a fantastic opportunity. However, they can’t become dependent on them. Shandong and Jinan must take ownership. I’ve always believed the provincial government should lead this effort. It’s Taishan! Specifically, it’s Shandong Taishan!
8. My point has always been that it’s not simply about wanting money, but rather about streamlining all aspects of the situation. There must be a sense of responsibility and a forward-looking mindset. Once everything is straightened out, the club can still maintain its competitiveness as a top team while reducing spending.
