The Chinese Super League season is more than halfway through, and Zhang Wei, an experienced player in the league, is a key pillar of the team’s defense. Recently, Shenzhen New Pengcheng Football Club conducted an interview with him.

Dialogue with Zhang Wei of Shenzhen New Pengcheng: Chinese Super League Competition is More Intense, But I’m Still Young

New Pengcheng: Born in Henan, started your professional career in Shanghai, please introduce your football journey.

Zhang Wei: I was born in Henan, and when I was one year old, I went to Nanjing with my parents, and they have been living in Nanjing ever since. I started my football journey in Nanjing. I was studying at the No. 1 Central Primary School in Gulou District, where I received my football enlightenment with Wu Lei and Lin Chuanyi at the same school. After graduating from primary school, I went to Beijing, and then at the age of 16, I went to Shanghai to start my professional football career.

New Pengcheng: The Chinese Super League season is more than halfway through, what do you think are the biggest changes in the league?

Zhang Wei: In the past two years, the domestic league has been gradually recovering. This year, the Chinese Super League has seen an increase in fan attention and the intensity of competition. The net playing time has increased, and each team has its own unique characteristics, making it difficult to play against. For us, we need to continue to go all out and strive for better results.

New Pengcheng: You have played in the Chinese Super League for many years and have won the Chinese Super League championship. Now, as a veteran, what kind of experience do you hope to pass on to young players? What goals have you set for yourself?

Zhang Wei: I think I still have a young mentality, I’m still young. There are many young players in the team, and I try to share with them some of the experience I have accumulated over the years during training and games to help them grow better and help the team improve. Last year, my league stats were 3 goals and 1 assist. This year, I set a goal for myself to not be lower than last year.

New Pengcheng: What changes have you experienced in your life after coming to Shenzhen? Are you used to the climate and food here?

Zhang Wei: I think the food here is okay because I’ve traveled far and wide over the years, and I’ve been to different places to play games, so I can adapt relatively quickly. But Shenzhen’s weather is really hot, I’m still getting used to it.

New Pengcheng: After each home game, fans encourage the whole team to keep up the good work and look forward to the team achieving better results, how do you respond to their expectations?

Zhang Wei: I think the only way to respond to them is with our actions and performance on the field. We hope our results will continue to improve, attracting more fans to come to the stadium. One day, we hope to see a full stadium and fight side by side with everyone.
