Li Yi: Studying abroad won’t solve China’s football problems, we should raise player salaries

Recently, former national footballer Dong Fangzhuo and Li Yi participated in a talk show together. In the show, Li Yi discussed the current problems of Chinese football with host Yang Yi.

Li Yi: Studying abroad won’t solve China’s football problems, we should raise player salaries

Yang Yi said: “Now (Chinese football) is trying to suppress athletes’ salaries, forcing them, especially young athletes, to overcome their laziness. If they have the chance, let them go abroad, to Europe, whether it’s the top five leagues or the second-tier leagues in Europe, to hone their skills in that environment.”

Li Yi disagreed, saying: “I don’t think this approach is necessarily the real solution. I think we should raise the salaries of these football players now. But, there needs to be a limit. We can’t go back to the golden age, that was reckless, but now (player salaries) are too low.

When the environment (salaries) is low, naturally nobody wants to choose (football). You say that we have 1.4 billion people and we can’t find 11 (national team starters). But how many people out of those 1.4 billion are actually playing football, are actually playing professionally? How many parents are willing to send their children to professional teams, or let them take this (football) path? The dropout rate is very high.”
