On July 7th, Brazil drew 0-0 with Uruguay in the Copa America quarter-finals after 90 minutes. Brazil lost 2-4 in the penalty shootout, crashing out of the tournament and missing out on a semi-final spot.
After the game, Brazil’s head coach, Dorival, attended the post-match press conference and expressed his views on the team’s loss. “Naturally, after a match like this, everything can be left behind. (As a coach) I have to have a clear conscience. Technically, we didn’t play at a high level, but I don’t rule out the team’s dedication. The players showed fighting spirit, the team never stopped pushing forward, it was always a courageous team. In this process, we did far more positive things than negative ones.”
When asked about Brazil failing to score against Uruguay despite playing with a man advantage in the final 10 minutes, Dorival said, “This was a match full of confrontation and clashes. Both teams rarely had clear heads. After getting an extra player, our game became more complicated. The players didn’t have the clear heads to finish the game. Things didn’t happen the way we wanted them to.”
Regarding Endrick, Dorival said, “Endrick is a naturally talented player. He had a good game. Although he didn’t create many opportunities, he fought until the end.”
Regarding his future, he said, “We’ll sit down with the Brazilian Football Confederation and discuss everything that happened. I must admit, if anyone is to be held accountable, it’s the coach. But we have made significant changes to the team. This is a process we have to go through, but we still have a lot of room for improvement.”
