What’s wrong with the Samba Army? They’ve only reached the semi-finals twice in the last six Copa America tournaments

On July 7th, Brazil lost to Uruguay in a penalty shootout in the Copa America quarter-finals, failing to reach the semi-finals. This is the fourth time in the last six Copa America tournaments that the Samba Army has failed to reach the top four.

Brazil dominated the Copa America between 1997 and 2007, winning the tournament four times in five editions. However, since the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, the Samba Army has been unable to maintain its dominance in South American football. In 2011 and 2015, the team was eliminated in the round of 16. In 2016, they were even more humiliatingly eliminated from the group stage.

In 2019 and 2021, the Copa America was held in Brazil. As hosts, the Samba Army had a brief moment of glory, winning the tournament in 2019 and finishing as runner-up to their rivals Argentina in 2021. However, in this edition of the Copa America, Brazil, away from home, was once again “brought back to earth”. Except for their 4-1 victory over Paraguay in the group stage, they only managed to score one goal in the remaining three games, and ultimately failed to reach the semi-finals as expected.
