The Copa America has been over for some time, but Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has publicly expressed his doubts about the officiating during the tournament.
Bravo said, “There are things we can’t control, we can’t fight them.”
Bravo pointed out, “In the first game against Peru, there were some strange calls. When you’re on the field trying to compete, some decisions will leave you feeling frustrated, even wanting to strangle the referee.” He continued, “In the second game against Argentina, we also saw some unusual situations.”
Bravo also mentioned his feelings while watching the games from the bench: “In the last game, I was sitting on the sidelines, you can observe the details of the game more closely, see more things. In this situation, you feel like you can’t compete. I felt strongly that if we didn’t get a red card and scored a goal, the referee would randomly award a penalty kick.”
Bravo specifically questioned Colombian referee Rolando Rolland, who officiated Chile’s game against Canada: “It’s very embarrassing when the referee allows players to utter a lot of insulting words in front of him without any response or record. This is unusual. Like that clear foul (against Rodrigo Echeverria), the referee didn’t take any action, not even VAR intervened for review. Everyone saw it, how can it be missed with technology?”
