On June 26th, Ecuadorian midfielder Gruezo and the head coach attended a press conference ahead of Ecuador’s match against Jamaica. The two publicly responded to criticism following their opening game loss to Venezuela. The MLS midfielder stated, “The media is always waiting for us to make mistakes so they can point fingers at us.”
When asked about his perspective on the criticism of the team, Gruezo said, “The team is fine. They (the media) are waiting for us to make a mistake so they can criticize us. They were already ready before we even started playing.” He then added, “They always point out why this player or that player isn’t there instead of supporting us. Some people support, others don’t. And they’re always waiting for the slightest error to stir up controversy. It’s nothing new, but it’s important for us to stick together, believe in our work, and move forward.”
Ecuador’s Spanish coach also responded to the criticism, saying, “People can express their opinions, and everyone has their own. But I am focused on my job. Sometimes the team gets treated unfairly. For me, the most important thing is that the players believe and show dedication. I won’t waste too much energy worrying about criticism.”
Ecuador will face Jamaica on June 27th at 6:00 AM. They must win this game if they want to advance to the knockout stage.
