Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has heaped praise on Emiliano Martinez after the goalkeeper’s penalty shootout heroics in the Copa America quarter-final win over Ecuador.
“We have a monster in our goal,” De Paul said. “What he did was insane!”
In an interview with reporters, De Paul said, “(Martinez) deserves all the praise he’s getting. He’s going to love it. He gives the Argentina team a lot of security.”
When asked about being forced into a penalty shootout, De Paul hinted at frustration with the officiating. “We knew the game was going to be like this,” he said. “Sometimes we want to play much better but some things don’t allow us to.”
Argentina advanced to the Copa America semi-finals thanks to Martinez’s heroics. Their next opponent will be the winner of Venezuela and Canada, with the match scheduled for July 10 at 8:00.
