Mexico Eliminated from Copa América After Group Stage

On July 1, Mexico drew 0-0 with Ecuador in the final round of Group B of the Copa América, which led to their elimination due to a lower goal difference.

At the end of the Group B matches, Venezuela topped the group with 9 points from three wins, Ecuador and Mexico both finished with 4 points from one win, one draw and one loss. Ecuador qualified for the next round by virtue of a better goal difference, while Jamaica finished bottom of the group with no points from three losses.

Mexico has had its share of success at the Copa América, finishing as runner-up in 1993 and 2001. However, since 2011, Mexico’s performance has declined, with the team only qualifying for the knockout stages once in the past four Copa América tournaments. They were also eliminated from the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, ending their streak of seven consecutive appearances in the Round of 16.

In terms of player value, Mexico is no longer able to compete with Ecuador. The team’s two most valuable players, Jiménez and Álvarez, have a combined market value of €75 million. The rest of the squad only has a maximum value of €10 million. Ecuador, on the other hand, boasts the likes of Caicedo (€75 million), Hincapié (€40 million) and Pacho (€35 million).

Moreover, the Mexican Apertura season has been announced to start on July 6. The Mexican team’s 26-man squad includes only seven players from foreign leagues, with the remaining 19 playing in Liga MX. This distraction has undoubtedly caused the players to be eager to return to their clubs.
