On July 2, after the final group stage match of the Copa America, the United States lost 0-1 to Uruguay and was eliminated. After the match, US coach Gregg Berhalter told the media that he is still the right man for the job.
When asked at the post-game press conference if he was still the right person to lead the United States Men’s National Team into the 2026 World Cup, Berhalter simply replied: “Yes!”
“Look at the faces in the locker room, look at the emotions of the staff and the players, we’re very disappointed with the results,” he said. “We know we’re capable of better, and we didn’t show it in this game, that’s as simple as that.”
Berhalter returned as coach of the US team in June 2023. His contract includes the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. Despite having a roster featuring Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams, the US didn’t even reach the heights of their previous Copa America performance, when they lost to Argentina in the semifinals in 2016.
