Recently, former Polish international striker Szywierski, who played for J-League’s Nagoya Grampus and J2 League’s Omiya Ardija, gave an interview to Polish media kanalsportowy, talking about his experience playing in the Japanese league.
Szywierski said: “The level of Japanese football surprised me. When I played in Europe, I didn’t expect Japanese football to be like this. Here I saw the essence of football for the first time. The level of the players and the development of the clubs and infrastructure amazed me.”
“This is Japanese football, whether it’s the fan organization or the supporters, everything is positive. You can see the passion Japanese people have for football. I didn’t know much about Asian leagues before, so everything here surprised me.”
Szywierski, 31, started his career at Polish top-flight club Cracovia. He played for Ludogorets, Rubin and other Eastern European strong teams, before joining J-League club Nagoya Grampus in 2020. However, after scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances, he was banned worldwide due to a positive drug test. In July 2023, Szywierski returned to the Japanese league after serving the ban, joining Omiya Ardija, who were fighting relegation in the J2 League, on a free transfer. Although he scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist, he couldn’t help the team stay in the J2 League.
It is worth mentioning that when asked about his future plans, Szywierski said that he is no longer interested in football, and hinted that he may leave the green field.
