Recently, Kawasaki Frontale’s foreign striker Gomis appeared on former Japan national team player Daisuke Matsui’s personal media channel and shared his thoughts on the development of Japanese football.
When asked by Matsui about what elements are needed for the growth of Japanese football, Gomis, who has extensive experience playing for the French national team, said: “To grow, Japanese football still needs some time, and I believe time will bring growth. Japanese football has been growing since the professionalization of the J League in 1993, and that’s why we’re where we are today. Now there are many players playing in Europe, but it’s something that has been accumulated bit by bit since the birth of the Japanese professional league.”
In addition, Gomis also envisioned the future of Japanese football: “The key to the players’ growth is a strong sense of ambition. Kawasaki’s players are different from the players who play in Europe, but if they maintain the ambition to become big-name players, I think there will be Japanese players who will play for Real Madrid in the near future. I think the players at Kawasaki are all very promising. I think they perform very well in training and their attitude is also very positive. In the near future, within five or ten years, Japan could be in the top five in the world, and I think eventually a Japanese player will win the Ballon d’Or.”
Gomis, 38, has suffered two injuries since joining Kawasaki Frontale in August 2023, and even returned to France for treatment. In the first half of this season, Gomis has only played 9 league games for Kawasaki Frontale, scoring 3 goals, a significant drop in efficiency compared to his time in Europe.
