The J.League match between Urawa Red Diamonds and Kawasaki Frontale, which took place today, was terminated at half-time due to severe weather conditions. Subsequently, Urawa Red Diamonds Club issued a statement on their official social media platform expressing their apologies to the fans.
The full statement is as follows:
Thank you for coming to the 2024 J.League Round 28 Urawa Red Diamonds vs. Kawasaki Frontale match today in the midst of stormy weather.
Furthermore, due to the impact of the stormy weather, the kick-off time was delayed, and ultimately the match was terminated. Aside from those in attendance today, I offer my deepest apologies to the fans and supporters of both clubs who were anticipating this match.
While no thunder was confirmed at the time of the decision to terminate the match, the continuous heavy rain had caused water to accumulate on the field, leading to a high risk of player injury. This decision was made to protect the well-being of the players from both clubs.
Over 40,000 tickets were purchased for today’s game. This included many families with children who were attending as part of their summer holiday activities, including those who were looking forward to participating in club events. I also understand the difficulties of bringing children to watch a football match in such challenging weather conditions. I apologize for having to significantly reduce pre-match activities under these circumstances.
While the weather itself is beyond our control, we believe there are aspects of our own efforts that could have been improved in responding to the stormy weather at Saitama Stadium 2002.
We strongly hope that such a situation will not occur again in the future. Our club staff will thoroughly review our responses to the stormy weather during these matches and strive to improve our efforts.
On a final note, I understand that those in attendance today may encounter slippery conditions on their way home. Please be extra careful on your return journey.
