Today, former Japanese national team player Tatsumi Sakai announced that he will officially retire, and he will move to Thailand to start a second career as a durian grower.
In his retirement post today, Tatsumi Sakai said: “I am announcing my retirement to reflect on my football career, and I am determined to become the ‘King of Durians’. Next, I will be someone who can help and support many people in agriculture!”
The 33-year-old Tatsumi Sakai started his professional career at Sagan Tosu. While his league appearances were sparse, he was still recognized by former Japan national team coach Aguirre for his rarity as a left-footed center back and was called up to the national team to play against Uruguay. However, Tatsumi Sakai’s career after that was quite bumpy. The player faded from the spotlight after suffering a series of injuries and eventually moved to Thailand to continue his career. He has been unable to find a new club since 2022 after two years in Thailand.
