According to Japanese media outlet Asahi Shimbun, Austrian Red Bull Group is interested in acquiring an Asian team to enter the Asian market. J3 League club Omiya Ardija is a potential acquisition target.
Red Bull Group has been reaping the benefits of its investment in football in recent years. RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and Red Bull Bragantino have consistently performed well. Now, they are setting their sights on the growing Asian market. Asahi Shimbun has learned that Red Bull Group is interested in acquiring Omiya Ardija, which currently plays in the J3 League.
However, Red Bull Group will face a similar and very real obstacle that it encountered when it acquired Leipzig. While a change of shareholders does not require the approval of the J-League board, changes to the club’s name, logo, and colors do require approval. Since its inception, the J-League has not allowed club names to include company names. The J2 or J3 Leagues are less stringent in their requirements for company sponsorships. This is one of the reasons why Red Bull Group has chosen Omiya Ardija in the J3 League.
Omiya Ardija is located in Saitama City and is currently ranked first in the J3 League. There are precedents for foreign capital entering the J-League club’s operations. Currently, City Football Group, the investor in J1 League club Yokohama F. Marinos, is one such example.
