On June 27, FC Gifu, a J3 League club, announced that head coach Yusaku Ueno had submitted his resignation. The club respected and accepted his decision. In this weekend’s J3 League, assistant coach Kenichi Amano will take over as acting head coach. The team’s new head coach will be announced after careful consideration.
Ueno, 50, served as assistant coach for the Japanese national team at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, acting as a key tactical advisor for manager Hajime Moriyasu. In the 2023 season, Ueno led FC Gifu to an 8th place finish in the J3 League. However, this season, the team has been winless for nine consecutive rounds, sitting in 11th place, making promotion almost impossible.
Regarding his resignation, Ueno expressed regret, saying, “I am sorry to leave the coaching position in the middle of the season. However, the first two matches made me re-evaluate my coaching role in the team. I believe that my departure is the best choice for the team, so I submitted my resignation. I regret that I can’t fight with the supporters until the very end.” Notably, Ueno remained with FC Gifu after being persuaded by the club’s management, taking on a management role within the organization.
