On July 26, K League team Seoul FC issued an official announcement, detailing the investigation of midfielder Han Seung-gyu for alleged illegal investment, announcing the immediate termination of his contract and apologizing to fans.
Seoul FC also provided details, stating, “Han Seung-gyu’s alleged illegal investment took place in 2021, before joining Seoul FC. However, he concealed the fact that he was being investigated by relevant authorities and continued to play. This alleged illegal gambling behavior has severely damaged the team’s image. We have informed the Football Association of the situation and requested the matter be handled according to procedure.”
From 2021 to 2022, Han Seung-gyu allegedly participated in investment through an investment website, with an amount of 400 million won (approximately 2.09 million yuan). Ultimately, he has ended his career.
Born in Suwon in 1996, Han Seung-gyu was a core member of Yonsei University’s golden generation, alongside Kim Min-jae, Hwang Ki-wook, and Lee Geon-ho. In 2016, they won the Spring Tournament and dominated various competitions.
While studying at Yonsei University, Han Seung-gyu joined K League powerhouse Ulsan Hyundai on December 29, 2016. In his debut season, he appeared 9 times under Kim Do-hoon, scoring 1 goal and 1 assist, gradually challenging for a starting role. The following year, he played 31 times, scoring 5 goals and contributing 7 assists, earning the 2018 season Rookie of the Year award.
His impressive performance attracted the attention of Jeonbuk Hyundai, who activated his release clause and brought him to Jeonju. However, Jeonbuk’s foreign head coach, Jose Morais, didn’t trust the young player. Han Seung-gyu spent time on the bench and started looking for loan opportunities.
Han Seung-gyu was loaned to Seoul (2020 season) and Suwon FC (2021 season). The alleged illegal gambling took place during the 2021 season when he was loaned to Suwon FC. During this season, he appeared 26 times in league and cup matches, scoring 2 goals and contributing 3 assists.
In the 2022 season, back at his parent club Jeonbuk Hyundai, Han Seung-gyu was gradually sidelined from the starting lineup. He only appeared once in the match against Pohang and was even sent down to Jeonbuk’s B team. Frustrated, he joined Seoul on March 23, 2022.
Two years later, Han Seung-gyu has been released by Seoul.
