On July 23, K League team Seoul FC released a statement on social media explaining the stalled transfer deal and condemning Ulsan Hyundai for their breach of faith, which is unbecoming of a leading team in the K League.
The trade of Lee Tae-seok (Seoul) + cash for Won Du-jae (Ulsan) was one of the most anticipated transfer rumors in the K League this summer window. Several media outlets had already announced a “here we go”, and on July 17, during the Korean Cup match between Pohang and Seoul, Seoul benched Lee Tae-seok, who was involved in the transfer, making the deal seem like a done deal.
However, the two sides delayed the official announcement, and the transfer eventually reversed. The Ulsan side explained, “The situation changed because head coach Hong Myung-bo suddenly announced his appointment as national team coach. Without a permanent head coach to decide, the team could only cancel the transfer deal”.
Seoul released a statement today condemning Ulsan for their distortion of facts and breach of faith. “K League teams compete fiercely against each other. Although there is sometimes hurt feelings due to excessive competition, everyone is engaged in a healthy competition based on good faith, rules, and respect. However, Ulsan’s unilateral withdrawal of the transfer deal is a complete betrayal of faith. They used an unconvincing and frustrating excuse to break an agreement they reached, causing harm to both players. This is unprecedented, and we hope to never see it again. Especially on July 17, the team and some media released a public statement. The content and form of this statement make it difficult to believe it was an official statement. It includes distorted facts, causing serious misunderstandings. We deeply regret this.”
