K League Preview: Seoul Depleted After Midweek Clash, Gimcheon Top But Struggling on the Road

On July 21st at 6:00 PM, FC Seoul will face off against Gimcheon Sangmu in the 24th round of the K League.

The home team, FC Seoul, currently sits in the middle of the table, their three-game winning streak recently broken. Their recent league form has been a loss, a win, and a loss. In their midweek cup match, the team, despite fielding their starting lineup, suffered a 1-5 defeat at the hands of Pohang Steelers. Thankfully, their home record is strong, having won their last three matches at home, indicating their home strength is undeniable.

In terms of personnel, Jesse Lingard has been injured again and will definitely miss this match. Lee Seung-mo, a key player who provides dynamism in midfield, is also out injured and will definitely miss the game. Veteran Ki Sung-yueng will continue his recovery from injury. Yun Jong-kyu, a fringe national team full-back who recently returned from military service, and Lee Sang-min, a Korean U23 international centre-back, have both returned to the club but have been absent from Gimcheon Sangmu’s recent matches, making their fitness uncertain. Jordan international Al-Alaab has been training with the team for some time and has a chance to make the squad. William, who previously missed matches due to injury, also has a chance to return to the squad.

The away team, Gimcheon Sangmu, defeated Jeonbuk Hyundai 4-0 last round, reclaiming the top spot in the table. They had no midweek cup commitments, allowing them ample time for rest and recovery. However, their away win rate is low, with only one victory in their last seven away league matches.

In terms of personnel, all the players who completed their seventh round of military service have now been discharged. Kim Jun-hong, Kang Hyun-moo, Yun Jong-kyu, Lee Sang-min, Kim Jae-woo, Kim Tae-hyun, Park Min-kyu, Gu Bon-cheol, Kim Hyun-wook, Kim Jin-gyu, Kim Dong-hyun, Won Doo-jae, Kang Hyun-mok, Kim Min-jun, Jeong Ji-in, Lee Young-jun, and Lee Jong-min have all left the team.

New recruits have integrated quickly into the team. Korean media described Gimcheon Sangmu’s recent performance as “showing no signs of a transition period.” Star player Lee Dong-gyeong is in good form, with only speedy winger Lee Dong-jun out injured. However, with the departure of starting goalkeeper Kim Jun-hong, new goalkeeper Kim Dong-heon hasn’t yet reached his peak, leading to a drop in goalkeeping strength.
