On July 29, the new head coach inauguration ceremony for the South Korean national team was held at the Football Association building in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Former Ulsan Hyundai coach Hong Myung-bo officially took the reins of the South Korean national team amid controversy.
Prior to the inauguration ceremony, Hong Myung-bo apologized to Ulsan fans and K League fans with a 90-degree bow for his previous “flip-flopping” behavior, and delivered a prepared eight-page apology statement. “I am deeply sorry that I have caused various controversies and inconvenienced the people over the past five months. As a football person, I feel very sorry.” “I am deeply sorry and self-reproaching that I was unable to fulfill my promise to the Ulsan Hyundai fans and K League fans. I apologize for the disappointment and pain this choice has caused. I stand here to apologize. I am sorry.” “I hope to be forgiven by Ulsan and K League fans, and I will accept any criticism and reproach. The only way to be forgiven is to help the South Korean national team develop and progress.”
After apologizing, Hong Myung-bo emphasized the four key words for running the national team at the inauguration ceremony: respect, dialogue, responsibility, and dedication.
Regarding the football style of the South Korean team, Hong Myung-bo’s answer was, “Controlling the ball and dominating the game is key. We will develop plans and strategies based on this.”
Finally, Hong Myung-bo set the goal for the 2026 US-Canada-Mexico World Cup to be the quarterfinals. “This is the first time we are playing the World Cup outside of South Korea. Our best result so far is the round of 16. This time, we will strive to achieve a better result than the round of 16.”
