Last November, former Jeju United goalkeeper Ryu Yeon-soo was unfortunately paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident, forcing him to retire from his beloved football. Recent Korean media reports reveal that Ryu Yeon-soo has not succumbed to fate but has instead taken up shooting, aiming for the Paralympic Games.
Although paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, Ryu Yeon-soo boasts exceptional physical attributes. As a goalkeeper, he possesses outstanding upper body strength and reaction time, qualities that align perfectly with the sport of shooting. He has embarked on training, setting his sights on the Los Angeles Paralympic Games four years from now. Ryu Yeon-soo expressed, “I can no longer achieve my dreams in football, but in four years, I will realize my Olympic dream. My goal is to win gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.”
Ryu Yeon-soo was previously the goalkeeper for the K League team Jeju United. He joined the team in 2020 and had bright prospects for the future, only to be struck by a severe car accident in 2023 caused by a drunk driver. The accident left the 25-year-old Ryu Yeon-soo paralyzed from the waist down with no possibility of recovery, forcing him to retire at the prime of his career.
