According to Spanish media outlet COPE, a female referee named Marta is set to become the first woman to referee in professional football in Spain.
On Monday morning, the Spanish Football Federation announced the promotions and relegations of main referees and assistant referees. A female referee born in Palencia, belonging to the Tenerife Island referee committee, was promoted to the Segunda División. Marta’s full name is Marta Huerta de Aza, and she is poised to become the first woman in Spanish history to officiate a professional adult football match in Spain.
Other referees who were promoted include assistant coach Judit Romano Garcia to La Liga; Silvia Fernández Pérez to Segunda División; Olatz Rivera Olmedo and Eugenia Gil Soriano to Primera RFEF.
