According to Marca, 29-year-old French left-back Ferland Mendy has reached a basic agreement with Real Madrid to renew his contract, which will run until June 2027, with the player’s salary linked to his number of appearances.
Mendy joined Real Madrid from Lyon in 2019 for €48 million. His previous contract with the club was due to expire in June next year. Now, he will extend his stay with Real Madrid by two years, with an option to extend for another season based on the number of games he plays. Mendy participated in this year’s European Championship with France, but did not get any playing time. He is currently on holiday and will be able to sign the new contract with Real Madrid upon his return.
It is understood that the main point of discussion in the many contacts between Real Madrid and Mendy’s agent was his playing time since joining the club. Last season, Mendy’s performance changed, showing greater stability and participating in more matches at crucial moments of the season, essentially forgetting the injury problems he had suffered in the previous few seasons.
Mendy made 23 appearances in La Liga last season, missing the start of the season due to injury, but performing best in the Champions League, where he missed only 2 of the team’s 13 matches. These numbers are close to the 2020/21 season, when he made 26 appearances in the domestic league and played the same number of Champions League games. Last season, he made 37 appearances in all competitions, his highest tally since arriving at the Bernabeu.
