According to Spanish newspaper AS, Spanish entrepreneur Jordi Tebes has announced that he will run in the next Barcelona presidential election and is confident of winning. “The club is in a worse state now than when Laporta arrived,” he said.
For Laporta, the current situation could be described as internal and external woes. On the one hand, the club is heavily in debt, and on the other hand, several groups have emerged in opposition to him. Now, entrepreneur Jordi Tebes has publicly stated that he will run for president of the Barcelona club.
Tebes, 51, is the 33,488th member of Barcelona, born in the Costa Brava town of Sagaro, coincidentally the same place where Joan Laporta spends his summer holidays. As an entrepreneur, he is the founder of Bizum, which he sold to a US investment fund, giving him the resources and time to pursue his goal of becoming president of Barcelona in the future.
In an interview, Tebes criticized Laporta’s management: “Barcelona’s debt has increased and assets have decreased. So, economically, the club is in a worse state now than when Laporta arrived. We don’t have a stadium… by the way, there are many powerful companies in Catalonia that could build the Camp Nou. We don’t have good talent, the good talent has fled Barcelona, and I hope they will queue up to work for Barcelona,” he complained.
Tebes believes that a club like Barcelona needs good management not only in sports but also in economics, otherwise, the club will “go to death.” However, he admits that managing a club like Barcelona is not easy, as it requires winning championships, making money, and continuing to inspire fans.
Tebes is sure that Laporta will eventually serve out his term, although he believes there are grounds for a motion of no confidence. However, Tebes believes it is not appropriate to do so now because the club is in a bad state. “If I said a motion of no confidence should be launched now, I would be selfish. Why? Because the club doesn’t have a stadium, so it’s lost €200 million in revenue, and now it’s paralyzing the club… We’re working on building a competitive team, but we haven’t done it yet, and we’ll see how it goes this year. We don’t have any money, we don’t have any good talent, because they’re all gone. We can’t paralyze the club now, and the election is not far off.”
