Flick: Barca Emphasizes Possession, But Winning Is Key

According to Marca, new Barcelona coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has set a clear direction for the team in the early stages of his tenure. In an interview with Barca ONE, Flick emphasized that while possession football is ingrained in the Blaugrana’s DNA, his system will require the players to adopt a more direct attacking approach, emphasizing decisive finishing when opportunities arise.

Flick stated, “The tradition here is possession, but I want the team to also shoot directly. I want them to focus more on scoring, I don’t think my style has changed much. We are looking for the same things, the objective is to control the ball in the opponent’s half, to implement high pressing. But most importantly, you have to win.”

Flick believes that the team’s success hinges not only on technical prowess but also on converting every chance into a tangible goal.

Flick also shared his training philosophy, demanding players to give their all in every practice session, treating it with the same intensity as a competitive game. “If you train at only 80% intensity, you will never be able to perform at 100% in a game.”

Flick also indicated he expects a close connection with his players and has a zero-tolerance policy for lateness, seeing it as disrespect towards others. However, he is not in favor of fines.

Flick cautioned against solely focusing on the Clasico, as the match against Real Madrid is only two games in the season. “It’s unwise to say how many titles we’ll win, we have to be fully prepared,” he concluded.
