Witsel said: “In my head, I’m already a centre-back. At first, I had to adapt to this new position because it was a new challenge for me, but last season I felt I performed quite well in this position.”
Talking about why there was a change in position, the Belgian said: “The reason for this change is because Simeone wants more passing options in the backline. Being a midfielder, I can help the team play better with the ball. Thanks to Simeone, I have a very good relationship with him, he is a very straightforward person.”
The 35-year-old Witsel made 35 appearances (30 starts) for the Mattress Makers last season, scoring 2 goals.
