On August 1, Spanish media outlet Atletico Universe reported that Atletico Madrid are still keen on signing Manchester City forward Alvarez.
Atletico Madrid are working hard to sign several players this summer. In defense, they have completed the deal for Robin Le Normand, while they are also working to bring Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and Villarreal forward Alexander Sorloth to the Metropolitano. In addition to these moves, they also hope to secure the arrival of Julian Alvarez, as the Argentine forward’s future at Manchester City is uncertain.
Reports suggest that the Mattress Makers see Alvarez as the successor to French star Griezmann in their squad. Atletico believe Alvarez is a dream signing and are likely to make a move for him later in the transfer window. He is even above Sorloth on the transfer list. (Sorloth is seen as a replacement for Alvaro Morata.)
Furthermore, Spanish media outlet Marca explained why Alvarez is so desperately wanted by Atletico: club officials believe the “Spider” is a strategic signing to mitigate the impact of Antoine Griezmann’s inevitable departure from the team. Griezmann currently has one year left on his contract with Atletico, and there is a €10 million release clause in his contract. Therefore, Los Angeles FC are willing to sign him this summer, or wait until next summer for a free transfer.
In this regard, Alvarez could be Griezmann’s successor at Atletico Madrid. Because their playing styles are similar – the former could be molded into the role more by Atletico coach Diego Simeone.
