Ten years ago, when he joined Barcelona, Ter Stegen was an unknown young goalkeeper. By 2024, Ter Stegen has become a legendary goalkeeper who deserves to be written into Barca’s history.
The German is the 12th most capped player in Barcelona’s history (413 appearances), second only to Valdés among goalkeepers. In a recent interview with ESPN, Ter Stegen praised his new coach Flick and said the team has the potential to compete with Real Madrid for the title.
Looking back on his 10 years at Barca, Ter Stegen has a lot to say: “I’m very satisfied with this unique experience, as a player and as a person, I’ve been learning and growing, and I think I’ve achieved what Zubizarreta told me when I signed. Playing for Barca is a big deal, and I always enjoy it. Every time I wear the Barca shirt, I give my all for this badge.”
Speaking about the team’s new coach Flick, who he worked with for the German national team, Ter Stegen had this to say: “Hansi places a lot of importance on physical training, it’s his coaching philosophy, and I think it will give us the physical strength we need to compete throughout the season. He’s also a very hard-working person, and he wants us to give everything we’ve got too. He’s very clear about what he wants, and he’s very direct about it. It’s important to him that everyone knows their place and what they need to do for the team.”
Real Madrid were hugely successful last season, but Ter Stegen believes that Barcelona are now capable of going head-to-head with them: “I think the team is ready to fight for the title. We are starting the preparation with great enthusiasm, and I believe we have a good squad to compete. It will be a long season, and we are all eager to fight for the title. New signings? That’s a club matter, but I think the current squad is good. So far, I’ve seen the young players in the team have a strong desire to fight, and I think we can compete with any team.”
At the end of the interview, Ter Stegen talked about his longing for the club’s greatest player – Messi: “It’s been three years, and I’m still missing Messi. As a player, Messi is one of a kind, he’s at his best in every match, he’s the greatest footballer of all time.”
