FIFA Wants World Cup Final to Be Held at Santiago Bernabéu, Hopes to Persuade Real Madrid Soon

Spanish newspaper Marca confirmed that FIFA wants the 2030 World Cup final to be held at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Currently, FIFA is in talks with Real Madrid and hopes to reach an agreement as soon as possible.

In October 2023, FIFA announced that the 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by three continents, with Spain and Portugal from Europe, Morocco from Africa, and Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay from South America hosting the tournament’s three opening matches in celebration of the World Cup’s centenary.

Regarding the final, FIFA has always been clear: it wants the match to be held at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The question now is when Real Madrid will hand over the use of its home stadium to FIFA and the organising committee, and what price FIFA will pay.

Currently, Real Madrid has stated that they understand that hosting the World Cup final at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium—especially for the centenary celebration—would bring greater prestige to the stadium and the club, but they are not willing to give up use of the stadium for too long. This is because the Santiago Bernabéu brings in significant revenue for Real Madrid—not just from ticket sales and sponsorships, but also from rentals during the off-season for various entertainment and cultural events.

FIFA and Real Madrid are currently negotiating this matter. There is still plenty of time, as the specific venue arrangements for the 2026 World Cup were announced less than a year before the event. Both sides are optimistic about reaching a final agreement.

If negotiations are successful, this would be the second time the Santiago Bernabéu stadium has hosted a World Cup final, after the 1982 final (Italy 3-1 West Germany). Additionally, the Santiago Bernabéu has hosted the 1964 European Cup final, as well as the 1957, 1969, 1980, and 2010 Champions League finals, and the 2018 Copa Libertadores final.
