Real Madrid’s Plan to Demolish the Bernabéu and Build a 120,000-Capacity Stadium Falls Through Due to Disagreements

On June 27, Spanish newspaper Marca published a deep dive report revealing an ambitious strategic project Real Madrid had been working on. The plan was to build a new stadium with a capacity of 120,000 people and transform the existing space into a green area to address the noise, traffic and parking issues in the city center.

In December 1947, after overcoming countless economic and technical difficulties, Real Madrid built the Bernabéu on the foundations of the old Chamartín Stadium. At the time, the location in the north of the city, on the banks of the Manzanares River, followed the principle of placing the stadium on the outskirts of Madrid, free from parking, noise and neighbor complaints. However, with the city’s development and population growth, as well as the rapid development of Real Madrid, the Bernabéu Stadium has become a significant challenge for Madrid.

The stadium is currently considered a problem for traffic, parking and people flow. As one of the city’s central hubs, the Bernabéu Stadium has also become a source of problems for the city. Therefore, building a new stadium was seen as a necessity not only for Real Madrid but also for the city of Madrid itself.

“The new stadium will be surrounded by a large green area for members and their families to relax and enjoy themselves, with swimming pools, tennis courts, a zoo, kind of like a Disney World.” The original project stated, “A new stadium with a capacity of 120,000 spectators (60,000 standing and 60,000 seated) … all indoors. It will have a car park for 8,000 vehicles and enough space for sporting facilities to accommodate any international competition, even the Olympic Games.”

However, the construction plan ultimately fell through due to reclassification, licensing and authorization issues, as well as disagreements within the Madrid City Council. Former Madrid Mayor Carlos Arias Navarro strongly opposed the project, emphasizing that “it would be like murder, it’s forbidden.”
