Barcelona have announced on their official website that they have reached an agreement with Rafael Márquez to extend his contract as manager of Barça B for one year, until June 30, 2025.
The official announcement reads:
FC Barcelona and Rafael Márquez have reached an agreement to extend the Mexican coach’s contract for one season. Márquez will remain in charge of Barça B until June 30, 2025.
Following this renewal, Márquez will be entering his third season as Barça B manager. Márquez played for the first team from 2003 to 2010, winning numerous trophies, including four league titles and two Champions League titles. He took charge of Barça B in the summer of 2022, his first managerial role after retiring from playing.
In his first season, Barça B had an impressive campaign, reaching the promotion playoff. They fell short in the semi-finals against Real Madrid Castilla, but the goal of developing young players was achieved.
In his second season, the team improved significantly. As the youngest team in the First Division RFEF (with an average age just over 19), Barça B continued to compete with many more experienced opponents and reached the promotion playoff final. They drew 1-1 with Córdoba in the first leg and lost 1-2 away in the second leg. Despite the defeat, the performance of the coach and the players was admirable.
So far, Márquez has managed Barça B for two seasons, leading the team in a total of 82 matches, winning 40, drawing 21, and losing 21.
