Ending his National Team Career! Gündogan Announces Retirement From Germany National Team on Social Media

In the early hours of August 20th, İlkay Gündogan announced his retirement from the German national team on social media.

Gündogan wrote:

Dear German football community, After much deliberation over the past few weeks, I have decided that the time has come for me to end my career with the national team.

Looking back on the 82 international appearances I made for my country, I am filled with great pride – a number I could never have imagined when I first made my debut for the national team in 2011. My highlights are obviously the great honours I was able to achieve, and the fact that I was able to lead the team as captain at the European Championship in our homeland last summer! After so many years, we finally made the country proud again – and to have been a part of that makes me incredibly happy. But before the tournament, I felt a certain fatigue both physically and mentally, which led me to contemplate. The games at club and national level haven’t gotten any fewer. I will certainly continue to be a fan of this national team and I very much hope that this upward trend will continue – then nothing will stand in our way to become one of the closest contenders for the World Cup title in 2026. We have a fantastic coach, a very strong team and great team spirit.

Thanks to all the fans, staff, coaches and teammates who have accompanied me on this journey.

It was an honour!

Thank you, Germany!

Your İlkay
