Spanish outlet Relevo reports that LaLiga is taking mental health seriously, establishing a 24-hour mental health service.
As times change, mental health issues that players once shied away from are now being openly discussed. Now, Spanish football institutions are taking an unprecedented step by providing mental health services for their players. Professional players face a constantly changing landscape, dealing with injuries, promotions, relegations, retirement and other uncertainties. Furthermore, off-field criticism and the loss of loved ones are additional pressures they face.
LaLiga president Jorge de la Vega stated, “Physical and mental health are both crucial, with the latter’s importance increasingly recognized in recent years. We decided to develop a program, and all clubs are in full agreement about the importance of mental health in professional football.”
Currently, a multilingual team of over 600 psychologists is available 24/7 to provide support for LaLiga players.
