Toni Kroos was surprised to learn that Ilkay Gündoğan could be leaving Barcelona after just one year. Kroos commented on a tweet by prominent transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano with a simple “Wow” and three emojis to express his surprise.
Gündoğan joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer, and was seen as an important addition to the team. However, after the end of the 2023/24 season, with Xavi leaving, new manager Fricke decided not to use Gündoğan in the new season, believing he did not fit the pressing tactics of the midfield and attack.
If Gündoğan leaves Barcelona, it would free up salary space for the club to register new players. However, it would also mean that Barcelona would lose a world-class player and would not receive any financial benefit from his departure.
According to Romano, Manchester City are working on a deal with Gündoğan’s agent to re-sign the German star. City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed to Gündoğan’s return.
Gündoğan has played for Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in his career, and won numerous honors before joining Barcelona, including the German Bundesliga runner-up, the German Cup, the English Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
On August 20th, Gündoğan announced his retirement from the German national team, in order to focus more on club competition.
