On August 15th, a day before the opening match of La Liga, Athletic Bilbao vs. Getafe, Getafe announced their squad for the away game at San Mamés Stadium. Only 18 players were included in the list, including three goalkeepers. Apart from that, Getafe had no other players available.
Getafe manager José Bordalás addressed the “18-man squad” issue at the pre-match press conference.
“This is due to the lack of personnel. But we are focused on tomorrow’s game, the first round of La Liga, and we are focused on facing the game with the greatest enthusiasm and optimism. We know it will be complicated, but we are very motivated right now.”
The coach later responded to the situation of Borja and Mayoral, the team’s main attackers, “They are very important to us, but you know he is injured and we will ensure he returns in better shape.”
The 18-man squad announced by Getafe included only three forwards, Carles Pérez, Peter Fedrico, and Alex Sola.
