Could This Be the Most Star-Studded Segunda División Season Ever? 17 Clubs Have Long History in La Liga

While the big five leagues are undoubtedly the main attraction, the Segunda División is experiencing an unprecedented boom this season. Of the 22 clubs competing in the Spanish second tier, 17 have spent at least seven seasons in La Liga, making this arguably the most “luxurious” Segunda División season in history.

A similar situation occurred in the 2009-10 season, when 18 of the 22 Segunda División clubs had a long history in La Liga. However, this season’s squad talent is arguably higher than the 2009-10 campaign.

Among these teams, Real Zaragoza has competed in La Liga for 58 seasons, never winning the league title but consistently considered a Spanish football powerhouse. Another notable name is Deportivo de La Coruña, a team that has graced La Liga for 46 seasons, claiming the championship in 1999-2000.

Beyond these two, there are Racing Santander with 44 seasons in La Liga, Sporting Gijón with 42, Real Oviedo with 38, Granada with 27, Málaga with 17, and teams like Levante and Cádiz, who were also considered top-tier clubs during their La Liga stints.

Eibar, Almería, Córdoba, Albacete, and others have all spent seven or more seasons in La Liga. Huesca, despite a brief two-season stay in the top flight, is also among these clubs.
