Real Madrid secures first trophy of the season, pockets millions in prize money

In the early hours of August 15th, Real Madrid and Atalanta faced off in Warsaw for the UEFA Super Cup, a competition with a total prize fund of €9 million. Real Madrid emerged victorious, claiming €5 million, €1 million more than runners-up Atalanta.

According to UEFA regulations, each participating team receives a fixed appearance fee of €4 million, while the champion receives an additional €1 million bonus. Therefore, Real Madrid, as champions, walked away with €5 million, while Atalanta received €4 million.

However, compared to the Champions League, this prize money seems insignificant, as each participating team in the Champions League receives a fixed prize of €18.62 million alone. Nevertheless, if this amount is distributed evenly across the eight group stage matches in the new season, the prize money per match would be approximately €2.3 million. Of course, the winning bonus in the Champions League is even more generous, with €2.1 million awarded for each victory in the new season.

Taking Real Madrid as an example, their victory in the 15th Champions League title brought them approximately €137 million in revenue. Specifically, this includes €86.61 million in prize money and fixed appearance fees, €36.38 million in UEFA ten-year ranking rewards, and approximately €13.84 million (the final figure is still awaiting official confirmation) in market pool bonuses. This portion of the prize money is generally distributed based on the contribution of each participating country’s television market to the broadcasting rights.

Starting this season, new competition rules have been implemented, merging the market pool and ten-year ranking bonuses into a new category called “Value Pillars.” The prize money for participation and match results has increased, by 32.5% and 52.2% respectively. Moreover, the number of participating teams has expanded from 32 to 36, and the number of matches has increased from 125 to 189. Additionally, at least 15 matches are required to win the title, compared to 13 in the previous format. If Real Madrid can replicate their performance from last season, achieving a perfect record in the group stage and ultimately winning the championship, they would receive €110.82 million in fixed and match prize money this season, a 128% increase over last season’s equivalent amount.
