Real Madrid defeated Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 15th, securing the trophy for the club. Goals from Valverde and Mbappé secured the victory for the Spanish side.

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match organized by UEFA contested by the winners of the two main European club competitions, the Champions League and the Europa League. The competition was originally called “Super Competition” and then “European Super Cup”, and was renamed to “UEFA Super Cup” in 1995 as part of UEFA’s rebranding.

From 1972 to 1999, the European Super Cup was contested between the winners of the European Cup/Champions League and the Cup Winners’ Cup. After the Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued, the competition became contested between the Champions League and UEFA Cup winners, which was rebranded as the Europa League in 2009.

With this victory, Real Madrid has become the most successful club in the Super Cup, with 6 trophies to their name. Barcelona and AC Milan follow closely behind with 5 each. Liverpool have won the competition 4 times. In terms of appearances, Barcelona lead with 9 appearances, followed by Real Madrid with 8 and AC Milan with 7. Manchester City won their first Super Cup title last season.
