August 21, River Plate have officially announced the signing of Argentine defender Acuña from La Liga side Sevilla on a free transfer. The deal will see the defender join the club on a three-year contract. River Plate changed their social media profile picture to an “egg” to announce the arrival of the World Cup winner.
Although his contract with Sevilla was set to expire in June 2025, the club decided to let him go for free as they felt that the 32-year-old was approaching the end of his career. His salary was high and he was struggling with fitness issues, which meant that he was unable to play in a majority of games.
The 32-year-old Acuña started his career at Argentine club Ferrocarril Oeste, before joining Racing Club in 2014. He moved to Europe in 2017, signing for Sporting CP before joining Sevilla in 2020 for €11.2 million. At international level, he won the Copa America with Argentina in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His current market value is €4 million.
