According to Austrian media outlet Heute, Real Madrid star David Alaba’s current injury recovery progress is below expectations, and he may have to wait until 2025 to officially return.
Alaba suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in mid-December last year, keeping him sidelined ever since. He participated in this year’s European Championship as a member of the Austrian coaching staff.
Heute reports that Alaba, who has been sidelined for over 200 days, is still experiencing mobility issues. For example, he is unable to navigate stairs normally and hasn’t started running training. His current recovery progress is closer to what is typically seen after 100-120 days following an ACL injury, making his recovery significantly slower than anticipated.
Reports also suggest that Alaba’s injury also involved cartilage damage in his knee, contributing to his slow recovery.
Another Austrian media outlet, Die Presse, indicates that, based on current circumstances, Alaba’s most likely return date is in 2025. Among Real Madrid’s three players who suffered ACL tears last season, Alaba’s situation is the most serious.
