On July 8, former Real Madrid captain Nacho threw his support behind Vinicius for this year’s Ballon d’Or, saying that he was a major contributor to Real Madrid’s double-winning season.
Nacho said: “Without a doubt, I think Vinicius deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year, look at the contribution he made to our title wins with Real Madrid.”
In the 2023-24 season, Vinicius appeared in 39 games for Real Madrid across all competitions, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists. His performance was particularly impressive in the Champions League knockout stages, which led to him being seen as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or, even ahead of his teammate Bellingham.
However, after Brazil exited the Copa America in the quarter-finals, Bellingham helped England reach the semi-finals of the European Championship. This reversed the odds in favor of Bellingham, and if England ultimately wins the Euros, it’s almost certain he’ll win the Ballon d’Or. Even though former Real Madrid captain Nacho has publicly endorsed Vinicius, it won’t be easy for him to win the Ballon d’Or.
