No Mbappe, No Problem? French Media Says Ligue 1 Has Plenty to Offer With Its Excellent Coaches

French media outlet GFFN has published an article stating that while Ligue 1 has faced a significant loss of talent, the upcoming season still holds plenty of intrigue, particularly with the emergence of a strong coaching contingent.

The report notes that talent drain is a well-known and accepted reality within Ligue 1, often referred to as a “talent farm.” The league acts as a “Farmers League,” nurturing young players each season before selling them to other, wealthier leagues. This transfer cycle, primarily in January and July, is a defining characteristic of Ligue 1’s model.

This year has seen a particularly hefty harvest, with notable departures including Mbappe, Thuram Jr., Aubameyang, Yoro, and Terrier. Additionally, players such as Fofana, Cherki, Doué, Todibo, and Jonathan David are likely to leave before the transfer window closes. The question is how to replenish the talent pool. The answer is not by splurging on star players, but rather by attracting and retaining top-notch coaches.

In recent years, player development has been a top priority for many Ligue 1 teams, often serving as a financial lifeline. Coaches, on the other hand, have sometimes been seen as expendable. Last season, five of the top ten teams in Ligue 1 made managerial changes. This summer, however, the focus has shifted. Acquiring or retaining suitable coaches and developing plans around them is paramount, rather than resorting to damage control after issues arise.

This season, the top three teams in Ligue 1 have retained their managers. Paris Saint-Germain continues under Luis Enrique, Monaco under Philippe Clement, and Brest under Eric Roy. Furthermore, Ligue 1 welcomes new coaches, such as Elhan Nass, who led Le Havre to promotion with a modest budget last season, impressing with a solid and compact defensive structure. The rise of new managers like Elsner, Haise, and Stil in Ligue 1 signifies a shift: the days of experienced coaches being the automatic choice are waning.

One of the most noteworthy appointments is Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille. Finding a manager to stay at Marseille has been a challenge, with a revolving door of coaches including Jorge Sampaoli, Igor Tudor, and Marcelino. This summer, the appointment of De Zerbi signifies a significant investment, something the club has often been reluctant to make in the past. The willingness of a coach of De Zerbi’s stature to join a team outside Paris is rare, a testament to the league’s potential. Despite the significant talent drain this season, Ligue 1 remains a compelling watch.
