French forward Mathis Lambourde, 18, has been sentenced to two years of probation for causing the death of a pedestrian in a traffic accident, according to French media.
Lambourde, who plays for Rennes, is considered a rising star among France’s 2006 birth year generation.
On June 18, 2024, Lambourde was driving his father’s motorcycle with a friend in the center of Rennes. Due to heavy traffic, he was forced to drive onto the sidewalk, where he struck a 51-year-old female pedestrian.
The accident occurred at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour, resulting in serious injuries to the woman, who ultimately died. Police tests revealed that Lambourde had not been drinking or using drugs at the time of the incident.
During the subsequent criminal trial, Lambourde admitted that the motorcycle he was driving was uninsured. He said this was the first time he had driven the motorcycle and explained that he had been forced onto the sidewalk due to traffic congestion.
Ultimately, Lambourde was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years of probation. He was also banned from driving for a year and is prohibited from reapplying for a license for a year. If he commits another crime during the probation period, he could face seven years of actual imprisonment.
Lambourde is one of the top talents among France’s 2006 birth year generation, alongside other rising stars such as Zaiyr-Emery (Paris Saint-Germain), Elye Wahi (Lorient), and Georges Mikautadze (Monaco). He made his professional debut last season, appearing as a substitute in a match against Lille. As a member of the France U17 national team, he helped the team reach the final of the 2023 U17 European Championship and the U17 World Cup.
